The Jazz Singer (1927) is regarded as a landmark achievement in film history for moving the medium towards the adoption of sound. But, as you will notice, director Alan Crosland does not use sound consistently throughout the film, but at select moments. Describe the experience of watching a not quite silent, not quite sound film. Does it seem either more or less realistic than the silent films we’ve watched? Does the sound seem to add anything that silent films lack?
