All of you grew up having to take standardized tests. Successful teaching is linked to student test scores. Schools receive funding or lose funding based on these scores. Measurement, by way of test scores, is what drives primary and secondary education. This article raises concerns about assessment in college and questions whether similar assessments should be required in college. I mean, if you are going to pay that much tuition, shouldn’t colleges and universities be held accountable to whether you are learning?
This is a big ethical issue. Please discuss the following questions:
1. Do you think we should require standardized testing in colleges/universities as a way of assessing learning outcomes?
2. What did you learn about measurement in Chapter 4 that would either give you confidence that we can measure this learning or that attempting to do so would be a bad idea?
3. What solutions do you have to the problem the author presents?
