Media Studies

Even though I selected film studies for subject, this is actually a media studies course. The structure is shown in the requirement PDF. I will later upload several paper I’ve written before and the annotated sources. Please use the material I’ve written before and kind of reorganize them into a new essay. My idea for thesis (please rephrase)is that, godard utilizes the media form and manipulates cinematographic to challenge male gaze and invoke social commentary on gender norms. Jean-Luc Godard is one of the representative auteurs in the French New Wave renowned for his hit-and-run, art house bricolages such as Breathless and My life to live.

Historical Context and Film as a Medium
French New Wave
La Nouvelle Vaue (New Wave) is a French film movement which emerges between 1958 and 1962
Such influx of young, innovative directors was unprecedented in any national cinema, and French New Wave is often regarded as one of the most influential movements in the history of films.

– The advent of new technologies for film allows the auteur to manipulate and mold every aspect of the film

Godard and several of his critic colleagues from Cahiers du Cinema, namely, Francios Truffaut and Agnes Varda consciously employs innovative cinematography techniques to oust the cinéma de papa with their own youthful cinema and establish themselves as auteurs, using their critical writing as preparation for filmmaking. Godard takes a step further to challenge the sexuality portrayed in the French cinema, by boldly departing from continuity editing ….. so as to break the illusion of fourth wall.
