Overview
Defining what leadership is, who leaders are, what leaders do and how leadership is different from management — a phenomenon with which is often confused — is no easy task. Course learning activities and readings are intended to help learners understand the complex, multidimensional concept we refer to as leadership. It is designed to challenge learners to consider the leadership we need in nursing today, to think about themselves as leaders, and to reflect on how leadership responsibilities can be integrated into their roles as professional nurses.

• The learner will be familiarized with the major theories of leadership and management and will be able to distinguish between the two
• The learner will be introduced to concepts of leadership and management styles, followership, tasks of leadership and management and ethical issues of leadership

• Review various management and motivational theories
• Compare and contrast the major theories of leadership
• Define followership
• Identify a person you would consider a leader and evaluate her/his leadership qualities using leadership theory as a basis for your discussion
