Length: The paper is 3-5 pages, double-spaced.
The first part of the course focused primarily on the freedom of the will. That said, I would like you to write a philosophically argumentative paper on one of the following questions.
a) Harry Frankfurt argues that a person may be said to have constituted their will when there is harmony between their first-order desires and their second-order desires. One of Frankfurt’s conclusions is that the unwilling addict is a person while the wanton is not a person. Is Frankfurt right about this? Why or why not?
b) Compare and Contrast Peter Strawson’s compatibilist account with Pete van Inwagen’s incompatibilism. Does Strawson provide us with sufficient reason to not be worried about van Inwagen’s consequence argument?
c) Please critically evaluate Plato’s tri-partite psychology. In your view does Plato’s scheme provide a complete account of the structure of the mind and the interaction between its faculties?
