What role does “art writing” play in formulating the history of contemporary art? What kind of research does it take to understand the historical context and socio-political and/or cultural significance of an artist statement, interview, manifesto, curatorial statement, and/or exhibition review? This paper focuses on the role and significance of art writing to emphasize the value of the texts in the Theories and Documents textbook.
Directions: 1.) select and read one text (not already assigned on the syllabus) from your Theories and Documents (T-doc) textbook OR another reliable art writing source (this can include online newspaper, journal article, artist or museum website, etc.
2.) Write a five-page essay discussing the historical context and cultural significance of the text you have selected. Create a bibliography with at least ten sources (that can include your chosen text).
3.) Format of the paper: The paper must be typed, 12-point font, double spaced, five full pages, include images of artwork you reference, citations, and bibliography. You can use Chicago Style or MLA style.
