Professors Instructions: Theme Analysis – Essay #2 Assignment: For this assignment, in a 3 to 4 page essay, you will analyze the theme of a short story, poem or play, and how a particular author conveys the theme using an element of fiction. Remember, the theme is a recurrent idea or feeling woven through a text. And, thus far into the semester, we have discussed the following elements of fiction: plot, character, setting, point of view, irony, imagery, symbol, style and tone. Once you’ve identified a theme in a particular work, examine the work to determine how the author conveys the theme. Then construct a thesis that articulates your finding about the theme and the element of fiction used. In this essay, you must include relevant and specific textual evidence to support your thesis. When quoting directly from the work, indicate the page number from which the quote is taken using MLA documentation style. For example, “I must not only punish but punish with impunity” (217). Please remember that the only way to prove your point is by supporting your claims with textual evidence. You might have great ideas, but you must be able to support those ideas with textual evidence. Explore the following questions: 1. (1) What generalization(s) or statement(s) about life or human experience does the work make? 2. (2) What elements of the work contribute most heavily to the formulation of the theme? And, which elements of fiction does the author use to present and reinforce the theme? Thesis: Each separate work will invite its own approach, but here are two examples of thesis statements that combine the elements of fiction and theme: (1) “Through the character of Minnie Wright, Glaspell shows how living with cruelty and insensitivity leads to alienation, unhappiness, despair, and sometimes violence.” (2) “Hemingway uses setting to convey the message that we all seek meaning and belonging in life, and without it, there is no purpose in existing.” Organization: Introduction should lead up to the thesis, and the thesis should be stated clearly. Each body paragraph should discuss a different aspect showing how the theme is established and conveyed. All assumptions must be supported with examples from the text. Throughout the essay, connect each point with your thesis by explaining its significance.Theme Essay (1)
