Illustrative essay structure
• Introduction (about 200 words) – identify main question/issue and briefly define the
key terms in the question. Signpost the content of the essay and provide the reader with a
‘map’ of what is to come.
• Main body (about 1600 words) – remember to make one main point per paragraph
and make sure you explain how your points relate to the question (even if you think it is
obvious!).
• Conclusion (about 200 words) – summarise key points from the main body of the
essay. Do not introduce new points in your conclusion. Make reference to key words in the
title so that you make it clear to the reader how you have answered the question.
• Reference list (not included in the word count) – make sure this is correctly formatted
according to APA guidelines.
