Title:

An investigation into the possible relationship between sex and anxiety levels on the working memory capacity of adults from the working population

Aim of the study:

The aim of the study is to explore the difference between two independent variables of anxiety levels and sex on the dependent variable of working memory capacity (WMC) in adults within the working population. The objective is to determine whether WMC is sensitive to sex and anxiety.

The hypotheses:

  1. Working adults who exhibit high anxiety levels will demonstrate lower WMC.
  2. WMC is gender-sensitive.

Methods:

Design

The study employed a factorial design by using the behavioural measures of two self-reported questionnaires to examine the differences in WMC with regards to sex and anxiety level. Participants were invited to take part in a Qualtrics project via emails and/or the social media of Facebook and WhatsApp. The Qualtrics project includes background information of the study, demographic questions, six questions taken from the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory – Short Form (Marteau & Bekker, 1992) for state anxiety level, twenty questions from the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Form Y) (Spielberger, 1983) for trait anxiety level and thirty questions from The Working Memory Questionnaire (Vallat-Azouvi, Pradat-Diehl & Azouvi, 2012) for working memory capacity.

Participants

Working adults without a medical diagnosis linked to anxiety were recruited from emails and social media. Thirty-seven responses were received in the one-week data collection process. However, eight responses where participants did not fully consent, two responses with more than two questions remained unanswered in any part of the Qualtric project, and two responses from participants with an anxiety-related medical diagnosis were removed. Valid data was collected from twenty-five participants (15 females and 10 males) aged 19 to 69. Participants are native English speakers or fluent in English.
