The Essay
You will write an informative and analytical essay based on Iris Marion Young’s essay “Five Faces of Oppression.” In your essay, present Young’s definition of structural oppression, making sure to either quote or paraphrase from the article. Add a proper in-text citation. Then, present 21st century example of structural oppression. Analyze the example according to the categories of exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence—but note that you do not have to discuss all five (that could lead to a much longer paper). Instead, analyze the example in relation to the most applicable categories.
MLA Format
In-Text Citations: You will need to include MLA style in-text citations for any content that you quote or paraphrase from Young, as well as any content that include from outside sources. Quotations, paraphrases, definitions, biographical information, historical facts, statistics or other data that is not considered common knowledge needs to have an in-text citation. An in-text citation is just a quick reference to the source inside the body of the essay.
Works Cited: You will need to add a Works Cited page as the last page of the essay. The Works Cited page should list in alphabetical order the full citation for each in-text citation. You must list Young on the Works Cited page, but it is up to you to decide if other sources are needed.
