This assignment requires completion of multiple steps in chronological order. Additionally, you will need to use the “GRK-501 Translation Assistance” and if necessary review the “GRK-501 Transliteration” document you prepared in Topic 1.
Step 1: Translation and Comparison
Using Accordance and the work done in previous assignments, translate 1 John 1:5-2:5.
Compare your translation to the NIV, the ESV, and one other translation of your choice. In 200-250 words, describe the similarities and difference between your translation and each of these translations.
Step 2: Theological Word Summary
Identify one theologically significant word in 1 John 1:5-2:5. Using Accordance, conduct a word search for the lexical form. Search first for uses in 1 John, then the remaining Johannine writings, and finally the New Testament. Make observations of usage and establish the semantic range of the word in the New Testament. From that semantic range, select the most likely meaning in this passage. Give supporting rationale for your selection. This section should be 250-500 words.
Step 3: Grammatical Analysis
After completing Step 2, analyze three elements of grammar from 1 John 1:5-2:5. First, pick one of the present tense verbs in the passage and briefly discuss why the present tense matters for a right understanding of the text. Second, pick one of the nouns in the passage and briefly discuss why the noun is in its particular case. Show why knowing the meaning of the noun’s case helps you understand the meaning of the text. Third, pick one of the prepositions in the passage and analyze its exegetical significance in the context. Why do you think John chose to use this preposition as opposed to another one? For each of these grammatical features, provide a 100-150-word explanation of the grammar and the implications for interpretation. Note any actual or potential interpretive conflicts. Explain your understanding and give your rationale.
Step 4: Theological Summary and Application
Conclude the paper by summarizing the meaning of this passage and reflecting on major points of application (no more than three) that you would make if teaching or preaching this passage. This step should be 250-500 words.
Compile Steps 1-4 in one document that identifies each section with appropriate headings and subheadings.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the Turabian Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
