You may approach your paper through one of the following questions.
1.) Biography in Art
Should consumers boycott the work of artists who’ve done horrible things? If they do, what do should they do with the work once the artist has died? Should the other people associated with a film, a novel, a painting, or a poem also be punished financially for the artist’s misdeeds? What about in less dramatic cases? Should consumers consider an artist with an untarnished legacy’s biography when evaluating their work? How important is the artist’s life, and how important is what you see in the work itself?
2.) Should the Politics of a Piece of Art Matter?
Another approach is to consider the impact that your chosen art has had on a culture. When Abraham Lincoln met the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe, he famously asked her, “Are you the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war?” Has your art made that kind of impact? Is it part of any movements? Is it against any movements? Is a work of art taking a political stance make itself more valuable than a piece of art that doesn’t?
