A Collection of Dear Abby Responses from Readers

Dear Abby,

My girlfriend complains about my inconsiderate behavior that defies her expectations about the perfect love language. I am conservative person who feels that love should be reciprocated with honest actions and good intentions. I try to remember all of our significant dates of the year, if not all. I also buy presents and surprise her with random dates and getaways but she still insists that I am not doing enough. At this point, I am lost for words because I feel that this relationship is draining me. I dread going home whenever we have confrontations over the phone. I feel I am losing her and that I am the only one fighting for this relationship. What should I do?

A devastated boyfriend in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dear Boyfriend,

I am writing to you as if I am your girlfriend. I can feel your rage while sieving through your careful choice of words. As your girlfriend, I only need your attention and good intentions, which you have demonstrated during the course of our relationship.

Machiavelli says: “At this point one may note that men must be either pampered or annihilated. They avenge light offenses; they cannot avenge severe ones; hence, the harm one does to a man must be such as to obviate any fear of revenge,”(Machiavelli Chapter III).

Here, Machiavelli says that a Prince must make logical decisions to avoid making mistakes that will haunt him forever. However, the Prince will until later discover that he only has two options, which are limited between benevolence and destruction. While destruction is an unwanted option, it is a viable decision that should be explored only if the outcome does not have any consequences. During the renaissance, Machiavelli approached situations from a strategic point of view, which enabled the Prince to overcome scenarios affecting their reputation in the contemporary society. The Prince is an important aspect of the renaissance because of Machiavelli’s perspective in exploring the versatile nature of humanity.

Machiavellian beliefs and views can be incorporated in the world today because of their relevance, which provokes the thought process of individuals by channelling their inner strength to resolve issues hindering them from accomplishing their desired perspectives. In your case, destruction refers to leaving her because of her unappreciative behavior that not only piles pressure on you to do more but also exposes you a toxic environment where you feel unwanted. At the same time, benevolence will lead you to having a honest conversation with your girlfriend because of the need to resolve the underlying issues that pose a threat to your relationship. Whatever decision you make, I hope you will not forget my role as your other girlfriend.

Yours in love, Abby.

Dear Abby,

My husband of many years is unwilling to support my desire to advance my education. He wants me to become a housewife because he recently got a promotion, which has multiple perks that can guarantee our access to different aspects of life. What can I do to convince him about the benefits of my advanced degree program?

An unhappy housewife in Denver, Colorado.

Dear Unhappy,

You can be happy. Convincing your significant other about your pursuits of excellence and success should not be a task that you should be thinking of doing. If your husband cannot support your dreams, is he really your husband?

Machiavelli writes: “[P]eople are by nature changeable. It is easy to persuade them about some particular matter, but it is hard to hold them to that persuasion. Hence it is necessary to provide that when they no longer believe, they can be forced to believe,” (Machiavelli Chapter IV).

Here, Machiavelli talks about the dynamic nature of individuals when they are exposed to certain scenarios that interfere with their comfort zone. Persuasion is considered a skill that is commonly used to convince individuals about the benefits of embracing certain approaches in life.

In the world today, Machiavelli’s perspectives towards life can be used to convince individuals about the need to pursue their happiness. On many occasions, individuals fail to discover their desired goals and objectives because of their inability to reflect on their life. In your case, you should go forth and enroll in your preferred learning institution and allow your husband to learn through your defiance. If need be, I can write a recommendation to one of my friends in New York and move from that ungrateful son of a man. Power to you.

Yours in female empowerment, Abby.
